Portland, MAINE — A handful of food companies donated pounds of fresh produce, meat, fish and baked goods to Preble Street at the Maine Restaurant and Lodging Expo at the Cross Insurance Arena on March 27.
Native Maine (pictured above) handed over carts of juicy, ripe strawberries, pineapples and oranges to Joe Conroy, food programs director at Preble Street, who remarked on the impressive donation. "This time of year we don't have access to such fresh produce," he said of the outreach center that serves hundred's of hungry Mainers, many of them homeless.
The food rescue, orchestrated by HospitalityMaine, came at the end of its annual trade show that attracts hospitality leaders from across New England. Also participating in the food rescue was Performance Food Group NorthCenter, US Food, Dennis Paper and Food, and Costa Fruit and Produce.
Maine is the seventh most food insecure state in the Nation. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 16 percent of the state’s population is food insecure, including one out of every five children.
