Advocacy: The act or process of supporting a cause or proposal.
HospitalityMaine is heavily involved in legislative and rulemaking issues at the Federal, state and local levels. Our advocacy has been crucial in the fight to increase the number of H2B visas available for the hospitality industry in Maine. Protection of the H2B and J-1 visa programs has become paramount as the State of Maine faces one of its most acute labor shortages in decades.
At the state level, our most recent and perhaps largest victory has been working with restaurant and inn owners and their employees to get the tip credit reinstated. That success will save restaurateurs, hoteliers and foodservice professionals tens of thousands of dollars over the next few years. We will remain vigilant in keeping this credit in statute moving forward.
At the local level, there are many communities looking at ordinances to regulate short term rentals for the betterment of their cities and towns. We have been working diligently to help assist local groups in these efforts. There are many other issues brewing at the local level, like paid sick leave, hotel linkage fees and the plastic straw bans in Portland, that we take great interest in and in a home rule state like Maine, there will be more to come.
